Brief Interlude

SinSynn asked in the comments below whether or not I play any other tabletop games, or have given thought to them.

In addition to my 40k armies (12k Orks, 6k Eldar, 5k Chaos Marines, 2k Blood Angels, about 2k of Dark Angels, around 2k of Scythes of the Emperor) I have a WFB Dark Elves army, though only about 1700 points or so built.  If we count Space Hulk and Blood Bowl, there's those - but the only other one I would describe myself as playing (and I wouldn't actually call myself a WFB player...) is Dystopian Wars, Spartan Games' bizarre Victorian era game of naval, land and air combat.  I'm largely only interested in the naval elements, and haven't bought myself a fleet yet, but I've tested a couple out, and am going to take the plunge soonish - I just want to give 6e 40k a proper dedication of my time and attention first.  Once I've explored it to my satisfaction, I shall buy a FSA force for Dystopian Wars.

The only other 'mainstream' tt game that appeals is Flames of War, but there simply aren't enough players around here to make that viable.  :(

Hope that answers your query.

You can always move to Indy. Sandwyrm and I would LOVE to have a TKE around to play FoW with....

;p

Personally, FoW just seems to be way too expensive. Something like £30 for 5 pieces of infantry i think?? Same again for 4 small tanks?

I was tempted to get the rulebook, but the price of it (also £30) and the minis stopped me.

Its cheaper to get the Epic Armageddon models

the price of FoW is much lower than 40K...

compared to 40K, you can get a FoW army for a song. look at some of the non-Battlefront model vendors. Plastic Soldier Co. Peter Pig, Forged in Battle, Zveda

there's cheaper alternatives to BF.

Haha, well, if you guys paid for my flights, got me somewhere to stay, arranged my visa, and got me a job? ;)

Epic Armageddon actually has quite a bit of appeal, I always wanted to play Space Marine and Adeptus Titanicus as a kid...

Mark could also be swung, maybe we could set up a bit of that at Slayers and get people into it...

FoW?? Rick you know that most there are firmly entrenched in 40k as the only Wargame.

You, Me and Bob are the only ones that really open to other games.
But i would prefer to play DW for a bit, before going into another game type

Flames of War is incredibly cheap to get into now. Check out the Plastic Soldier Company range. The plastics are better than the Battlefront models and a fraction of the price.

We did a series on tournament ready, 1750 point armies for below e100. Since then, the range has expanded three-fold so it's even easier to build good, cheap lists.

Hmmm, interesting. But would still like to play DW for about a while before even thinking of starting it.

The 1625 point (same as mid-war nationals) German army that I'm taking to a tourney this weekend would cost you about $150 to buy. $180 if you buy the tanks from Battlefront instead of Plastic Soldier.

I know you're just a hired shill Death, but at least do some research on the competition so your FUD sounds compelling. You can buy the FoW Starter set , that comes with a mini-rulebook and minis for just a little over half of what the 6th Edition Rulebook costs.

I was actualy going by what i saw at a recent convention, and by a quick look on Wayland games.....so I did do some research.
In fact that research is shown up above in my first comment. Those numbers arent just random. Rounded down maybe, but not random.
Never even saw that there was a starter set.

So how about you leave the troll at home, and all will be fine.

SandWyrm said...

That's a laugh.

A large 10-stand platoon (48 men) of German infantry on Wayland costs just £15.30. Brits are roughly the same.

Tanks range around £30 for FIVE.

Newbreed said...

£30 for five... Still a rip-off. :) You can get five Panthers for £20 these days.

True, but I was quoting Battlefront prices. Plastic Soldier is always going to offer the best deals for stuff they carry.

BTW: I have to apologize to Death. I don't really think you're a shill. Looking at what I wrote (after sleeping) I now realize that what I intended to be sarcastic and funny really wasn't. More like tired and cranky. My bad. :(

If you pop by Wee Gamers Morrow Bunker in White Primary School you can't have a game of Flames of War. There are a lot of players in NI. We are open for games Saturday & Sunday evenings. We hope to also be open on Thursday evenings too. :-)
